How to Force Hyacinth Bulbs in a Vase

1. Fill the vase with water to just below the cup where the bulb will rest — the base of the bulb should barely touch the water surface.
2. Place the bulb root-end down, growing-end up in the cup. Growth tip may already be showing — that’s normal.
3. Position the vase on a bright windowsill with indirect light.
4. Maintain water level — check regularly and top up to keep the base of the bulb just at the water’s surface. Change water periodically to keep it fresh.
5. Turn the vase daily to encourage upright, even growth.
6. Enjoy approximately 2 weeks of fragrant bloom. Forced bulbs do not typically transition well to outdoor garden planting — compost them after blooming.

Tips

• Wear gloves when handling hyacinth bulbs — the outer skin can cause mild skin irritation in some people
• For the best display, pair with top-size 16/17 cm hyacinth bulbs
• A chilling period (8–10 weeks in a cool, dark spot at ~35–45°F) before forcing encourages the strongest bloom — or purchase pre-chilled bulbs
• Keep away from direct heat sources and strong direct sun during forcing
