Jersey Supreme is the newest release in the Jersey hybrid family — and it’s built for speed. This predominantly all-male variety yields very early in the season and can be harvested a full year earlier than most other asparagus varieties. If you want a productive, premium asparagus bed without the long wait, Jersey Supreme delivers.

Variety Highlights

  • Harvest a full year earlier than standard varieties
  • Predominantly all-male — more energy into spears, fewer volunteer seedlings
  • Outstanding productivity and uniformity with excellent flavor
  • Very cold-tolerant and adaptable across a wide range of climates
  • Good rust resistance and high tolerance to fusarium
  • Plant 18 inches apart; USDA Zones 3–9

Planting Instructions

  1. Amend soil the fall before planting with 20 lbs of 10-20-10 fertilizer or mature compost per 1,000 sq ft, worked 6 inches deep.
  2. Select a full-sun site with well-drained soil. Medium to light soils are best; heavy clay loam also works.
  3. In early spring after last frost, dig trenches 5 inches deep and 6–8 inches apart in rows.
  4. Add 2 lbs of 0-20-0 superphosphate per 50-foot row; cover with 1 inch of soil.
  5. Soak crowns in lukewarm water for a few minutes before planting.
  6. Set crowns 18 inches apart, buds pointing up; spread roots over trench sides.
  7. Fill with 3 parts topsoil and 1 part compost. Do not compact.
  8. Water thoroughly after planting.
  9. Mulch 4–8 inches after emergence to suppress weeds.
  10. Side-dress with mulch each fall; cut back dead fern in early spring.
  11. Begin harvesting 7–9 inch spears by snapping at the base once crowns are established.
