Variety details
- Botanical name: Raphanus sativus
- Variety: Cherry Belle
- Type: Open-pollinated heirloom, cool-season vegetable
- Roots: Round, cherry red with crisp white flesh
- Harvest size: Approximately 3/4–1 inch in diameter
- Maturity: Approximately 22 days from sowing under favorable conditions; weather and growing conditions affect timing
- Planting method: Direct sow
How to sow
- Choose a sunny position with loose, well-drained soil. Remove stones and break up compacted soil so roots can develop evenly.
- Sow seeds approximately 1/2 inch deep in early spring or as temperatures cool toward fall. Avoid scheduling the crop for peak summer heat.
- Water gently after sowing and keep the seedbed evenly moist during germination.
- Thin seedlings to approximately 2 inches apart, allowing room for round roots to form.
- For a staggered harvest, sow a small batch about every two weeks while conditions remain cool.
Growing and harvesting
Maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging. Crowding, heat, and delayed harvesting can reduce root quality, so check plants frequently as they approach harvest size.
Pull roots when they are young, firm, and approximately 3/4–1 inch across. Do not wait for every radish in the row to reach the same size. Tender young tops can also be washed and used as greens.
Kitchen use and storage
Slice into salads, serve with dips, or add to sandwiches for a crisp bite. Wash thoroughly before preparing. For storage, remove the tops, refrigerate the roots in a suitable container or bag, and use while firm and fresh. Store greens separately and use promptly.
Planning your planting season
Base sowing dates on local temperatures rather than a fixed calendar. This quick-growing crop is usually managed as a seasonal vegetable, so cool-weather timing is more useful than a perennial hardiness-zone range.
