Yukina Savoy Seeds – Brassica rapa | Tatsoi-Style Rosette | Cold-Hardy Asian Green

Yukina Savoy (Brassica rapa) is a standout cool-season Asian green that combines the beloved rosette form of tatsoi with larger, more substantial, heavily savoyed (crinkled) leaves and an upright, easy-to-harvest architecture. Thick, dark forest-green, spoon-shaped leaves with pale green petioles — striking in appearance, mild and sweet in flavor. Vigorous and versatile, Yukina Savoy is both heat and cold resistant and can be grown nearly year-round in many climates. Slow to bolt — meaning a longer harvest window and more value per planting. Approximately 21,500 seeds per oz.

Variety Details

  • Botanical Name: Brassica rapa
  • Type: Loose-head Chinese cabbage — cool-season annual
  • Leaf: Large, dark forest-green, heavily savoyed; spoon-shaped, upright growth
  • Flavor: Mild, slightly sweet — similar to tatsoi; excellent young
  • Days to maturity: Baby leaf 25 days; full rosette 45 days
  • Bolt resistance: Slow to bolt — longer harvest window than most Asian greens
  • Cold tolerance: Very good; handles light frost
  • Planting season: Late spring to early summer; late summer/fall; year-round in tropical climates
  • Approx. seeds per oz: ~21,500

Culinary Uses

  • Raw baby leaf salads — mild and tender at 25 days; no bitterness
  • Stir-fries with garlic, ginger, and oyster sauce
  • Asian soups — miso, hot pot, wonton, and congee toppings
  • Braised greens with stock, butter, or coconut milk
  • Sautéed as a quick side with sesame oil
  • Adds bulk and mild flavor to noodle dishes and grain bowls
  • Steam or blanch whole rosettes as a plated side vegetable

Planting Guide

  • Soil: Fertile, well-draining. Sow seeds after last frost in spring, or in late summer/early fall for cool-season harvest.
  • Sowing depth: ¼–½ inch deep.
  • Spacing: Thin to 8–12 inches apart for full rosettes; grow closer for baby leaf production.
  • Transplanting: Raise seedlings at 73–75°F (day) and above 53°F (night) until 5–7 true leaves appear. Transplant carefully; water and fertilize consistently after transplanting.
  • Vernalization note: Like all Chinese cabbage, Yukina Savoy can bolt if exposed to 41°F for one week, or 50°F for two weeks. Manage planting timing accordingly in spring.
  • Watering: Consistent moisture for lush, tender leaf growth. Fertilize as needed.

Harvesting

  • Baby greens: Begin harvesting outer leaves from 25 days.
  • Full rosettes: Harvest at 45 days by cutting the whole plant cleanly at the base.
  • Cut-and-come-again: Pick outer leaves individually for continued production from a single plant.
  • Harvest in the morning before heat reduces leaf moisture and texture.
