Planting outdoors

Plant after the last frost, once soil has warmed and nights are consistently around 50°F or warmer. Choose fertile, well-drained soil in a position sheltered from strong winds. Set tubers with the growing eye facing upward and cover with approximately 2 inches of soil. Space plants about 20–24 inches apart for room to grow and good air circulation.

Starting indoors

For an earlier start in cooler climates, pot up tubers 4–6 weeks before the last frost in 1–2 gallon containers with drainage holes. Use slightly moist growing mix, keep in a warm location with good light, and water sparingly before growth begins. Harden off before moving outdoors.

Growing and seasonal care

Provide support for the tall stems and water regularly once plants are actively growing, avoiding waterlogged soil. Remove spent blooms to keep the display tidy. Protect tubers from freezing; in cold-winter areas, follow local guidance for lifting and storing them before winter.
