Yellow Lupine - Lupinus densiflora aureus
Widely grown for its attractive yellow flowers, this lupine is also great to bind up areas of erosion or extremely sandy spots. Like many members of the lupine family it is also an effective fixer of nitrogen in soil. Capable of tolerating extreme temps, this biennial acts more like a perennial.

Lupine (Lupinus Polyphyllus Chandelier) - Attract bees, butterflies and birds to your garden by sowing Lupine seeds. The Lupine Chandelier is a stately yellow that commands attention, and it loves to bloom! Lupine flowers are sweet pea shaped and form on tall spikes that bloom in late spring and early summer. Some consider Lupine to be a shrubby perennial even though it is generally classified as a wild flower. The leaves are medium green, large, and they are divided into many finger-like leaflets. Lupine plants make a wonderful cottage garden addition, and they are even more eye-catching when planted in large masses. They requiring good drainage but are not fussy about soil.
Before sowing Lupine seeds, soak the flower seed in warm water for 24 hours. The soaking will aid in germination. You can sow the Lupine seeds indoors, 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost is expected. Use starter trays and peaty soil, sowing the Lupine flower seeds on top and lightly covering. Keep the flower seed moist until germination. Transplant the Lupine seedlings outside after danger of frost has passed and when the plants are 4 inches in height. Lupine flower seed can also be sown outdoors after danger of frost. In prepared soil, sow 3 - 4 seeds together, spacing them 18 - 24 inches apart. Cover lightly and keep seed moist. Thin to strongest plant when they reach 2 inches. For the first season, water Lupines well after planting and maintain 1 inch of water, once per week. Following this water routine the first year will ensure deep root establishment. The following years, as the Lupine matures, they will acclimate and use what water is provided by the environment and should only need irrigation during periods of prolonged heat and drought. Lupine plant care includes deadheading spent flower spikes.

For cut flowers, choose stems with flowers that have just opened. Strip the foliage that will fall below the water level, and place in water immediately.

Saving Yellow Lupine Seeds:
As the seed pods develop, watch them carefully. As soon as they ripen fully they will split and drop their seed. When the pods begin to turn brown, remove them and spread them out to dry. Remove the seed from the pods and store it in a cool, dry place. Keep in mind that these seeds are highly poisonous.
