Antirrhinum majus 'Arrow Yellow' is a tall, stately snapdragon producing upright spikes of vivid yellow, distinctly lipped flowers on 36-inch stems from mid-spring through fall. A reliable cool-season performer that flowers best when temperatures are moderate, Arrow Yellow is equally at home in cutting gardens, mixed borders, and container arrangements. As a short-lived perennial grown as an annual across most of North America, it tolerates light frost — making it one of the earliest flowers you can set out in spring. Deer resistant and a long-lasting cut flower.

Plant Highlights

  • Tall 36-inch spikes of vivid yellow blooms; mid-spring through fall
  • Excellent cut flower; long-lasting in the vase
  • Light frost tolerant — one of the earliest spring bedding plants
  • Performs best in cool weather; may pause in peak summer heat
  • Deer resistant
  • Approx. 200 seeds per packet

Growing Guide

Starting indoors: Sow 6–8 weeks before setting plants out. Surface-sow on pre-moistened, quality starter mix and press seeds in gently — do not cover; seeds need light to germinate. Keep at 64–72°F; germination in 10–21 days. Harden off seedlings for 10–14 days before transplanting outdoors. Pinch back at transplant time to encourage branching.

Mild-winter areas: Sow outdoors in a sheltered seedbed in late summer for winter and spring blooms.

Site & soil: Full sun; rich, moist, well-drained soil (pH 6.0–7.3). Space tall varieties 12–18 inches apart. Adding organic matter at planting significantly improves performance.

Ongoing care: Remove spent flower spikes to promote a second flush of blooms. Feed regularly through the season. In very hot climates, provide afternoon shade to extend the blooming period.
