Sowing and growing
Start indoors about 7–10 weeks before your planned transplant date. Sow 1/4 inch deep in a seed-starting mix and keep the soil warm and evenly moist, not soggy. Gentle bottom heat may help. Germination can be slow, sometimes taking several weeks.
Transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed. Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Water consistently, particularly during hot, dry weather. For container growing, use a well-drained pot of approximately 5 gallons to give roots room to develop.
Harvest and kitchen uses
For fully ripe peppers, allow pods to turn red on the plant. Snip them off with garden scissors rather than pulling. Add sparingly to salsas, chutneys, marinades, or hot sauces, pairing the fruity flavor with tomatoes or tropical fruits.
Handle with care
Wear gloves when cutting or handling harvested peppers. Avoid touching your eyes or face, and clean utensils and work surfaces thoroughly afterward. Keep hot peppers away from children and pets. This listing is for seeds, not fresh pepper pods.
