Jamaican Ginger Root – Rhizomes for Growing
Free shipping on orders $34.95+ to the contiguous U.S. — most items qualify. Live plants, plant bulbs, and black plastic nursery crates ship separately. Orders are typically processed the next business day.
Grow aromatic Jamaican ginger in a warm garden, greenhouse, or roomy container. Its spreading rhizomes develop beneath leafy green shoots, giving you a homegrown ingredient for fragrant curries, soups, stir-fries, and ginger drinks. In cooler climates, container growing makes it easier to provide the warmth and shelter this tropical plant needs.
What You Receive
Choose a ¼-pound, 1-pound, or 5-pound pack of ginger root rhizomes. Packs are sold by weight, not by a fixed number of pieces. This is ginger root, not seed packets or established potted plants.
Growing Conditions
- Temperature: Warm conditions around 70–90°F support active growth.
- Light: Dappled shade or bright, filtered light, with protection from intense sun.
- Soil: Rich, loose, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter.
- Moisture: Keep evenly moist without standing water or prolonged drying.
- Shelter: Protect leafy growth from strong winds.
- Growing spaces: Warm garden beds, large containers, grow bags, greenhouses, hoop houses, and conservatories.
When to Plant
Plant outdoors in spring after frost danger has passed and nighttime temperatures remain above approximately 55°F. For planting directly in garden soil, wait until soil temperatures are above approximately 75°F. Local conditions matter more than the calendar.
Where the warm season is short, pre-sprout indoors in late winter to extend growing time. Keep plants protected from cold and gradually acclimate them before moving outdoors.
Planting and Establishment
Set rhizomes horizontally in a loose growing medium with visible buds facing upward and cover lightly. Water gently and keep warm. Avoid saturating the medium before active growth begins. Once shoots develop, maintain even moisture and allow excess water to drain away.
Growing Ginger in Containers
Choose a broad container or grow bag with drainage holes, at least 12 inches wide for one plant. Rhizomes spread sideways, so a larger diameter provides room for growth.
Use a rich, well-draining potting mix containing compost or other organic matter. Place in bright, filtered light and protect from harsh afternoon sun. Check moisture regularly, especially in hot or windy weather, and empty water-filled saucers. Feed as needed with a suitable fertilizer according to its label.
Move containers to a warm, protected location before cold weather arrives. A greenhouse, conservatory, or bright indoor growing space can help extend the season. Read our guide to growing ginger indoors.
Garden Care
Improve garden soil with compost before planting and maintain drainage. Shelter plants beneath taller crops where appropriate to soften intense sunlight without placing them in deep shade. Water consistently during active growth, avoiding both waterlogged soil and completely dry roots.
Harvesting Your Ginger
Allow approximately 8–10 months for a mature harvest, depending on growing conditions. Younger rhizomes may be harvested once they have developed, although an early harvest reduces the eventual yield. Lift carefully to avoid damaging the rhizomes and clean your harvested ginger before kitchen use.
Kitchen Inspiration
Use harvested ginger to bring aromatic warmth to curries, soups, stir-fries, smoothies, teas, and ginger drinks. It also complements Jamaican-style chicken dishes and savory sauces. Peel or scrub as appropriate, then slice, grate, or mince for your recipe.
