Preparing and sowing seeds

Canna seeds have a very hard coat. Gently file a small spot opposite the seed scar, taking care not to damage the inside, then soak in room-temperature water for 24–48 hours. Sow approximately 1/2 inch deep in a seed-starting mix. Keep evenly moist, not waterlogged, and aim for 76–80°F. Prepared seeds may germinate in 10–20 days, though timing varies.

Growing and care

Provide seedlings with good light and pot them on as needed. Harden off gradually and transplant outdoors after frost danger has passed. Choose full sun and fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Water consistently during active growth, checking containers more often in hot weather. Avoid prolonged standing water.

Flowers and seasonal care

Remove spent flowers to keep plants tidy. Flowering may begin approximately 90–120 days after sowing under suitable conditions, but timing is not guaranteed. Protect from freezing temperatures and follow local guidance for overwintering cannas.

Garden uses

Use as the upright centerpiece of a container, combine with lower-growing flowers, or plant in groups for a bold summer display.
