Lupinus polyphyllus Russell Mix is the classic cottage garden lupine — towering 36–48 inch spikes in a rich mix of red, pink, purple, yellow, white, and bicolors that bloom from spring into early summer. A magnet for hummingbirds, butterflies, and bumblebees, Russell lupines bring dramatic vertical structure to borders and meadow plantings. They self-sow when not deadheaded, naturalizing over time into generous clumps. Deer resistant and perennial in Zones 4–8.

Plant Highlights

  • Bold mixed color spikes: red, pink, purple, yellow, white, and bicolors
  • Attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and pollinators
  • Deer resistant; self-sows if flowers are left to set seed
  • Excellent as a cut flower
  • Approx. 1,200 seeds per oz

Growing Guide

Seed prep: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing to improve germination rates.

Starting indoors: Sow in peaty starter trays 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Barely cover seeds; press into soil but do not bury deeply. Keep moist until germination (7–14 days at 68°F). Transplant when seedlings reach 4 inches and frost danger has passed.

Direct sowing: Sow outdoors 1–2 weeks after the last frost in prepared, well-drained soil. Sow 3–4 seeds together, 18–24 inches apart; thin to the strongest plant at 2 inches tall.

Watering: Water well the first season; aim for 1 inch per week to establish deep roots. Established plants are largely self-sufficient and need irrigation only during prolonged heat or drought.

Deadheading: Remove spent spikes to extend blooming; allow some to set seed if you want the plants to naturalize.
