Oriental Lily Outback – Tall Yellow Trumpet Lily | Bulbs

Bring bold, sunny colour to your garden with Oriental Lily Outback — a tall, vigorous, warm-toned lily that rises to an impressive 120 cm (4 feet) or more in full growth. Outback is a reliably cheerful performer with upward-facing, richly coloured blooms that light up the mid-to-late summer border and fill the garden with the classic, heady fragrance of Oriental lilies. A strong grower that thrives in well-drained soil and rewards with bolder, taller spires each passing year as the bulbs establish and multiply.

Supplied as top-size bulbs — 3 bulbs per bag. Plant in spring for summer blooms, or in autumn before the ground freezes for an early-season head start.

  • Height: 120 cm (4 ft) and taller in subsequent years

Planting Guide

  • When to plant: Spring (as soon as soil is workable) through autumn (before ground freezes). Plant bulbs promptly upon receipt for best results.
  • Site: Full sun to partial shade. Give Outback plenty of direct sun — insufficient light causes the stems to lean toward the brightest source. At least 6 hours of sun per day is ideal.
  • Soil: Any well-draining soil — Oriental Lilies tolerate both acidic and alkaline conditions. Avoid waterlogged ground, which will rot bulbs.
  • Planting depth: Plant bulbs with 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) of soil above them.
  • Spacing (in-ground): Arrange in groups of 3 or 5 for the best visual impact. Space bulbs 8 inches (20 cm) apart within a group; space groupings at least 3 feet (90 cm) apart.
  • Spacing (containers): Plant 3 bulbs in a 10–14 inch patio-style pot using quality, free-draining multi-purpose compost.

Growing Tips

  • Stake tall stems in exposed or windy locations before they reach full height.
  • Water consistently during the growing season; reduce watering once foliage begins to die back after blooming.
  • Allow foliage to yellow and die back naturally — do not cut stems early, as the leaves feed the bulb for next year’s growth.
  • Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring as growth emerges, and again once buds form.
  • Mulch around the base in autumn to protect bulbs from hard frosts in colder zones.
  • Bulbs will naturalize and multiply over time, producing increasingly dramatic clumps year after year.

Garden Uses

  • Statement back-of-border perennial — provides height and late-summer colour
  • Mixed cottage garden borders with roses, salvias, and ornamental grasses
