Spacing: 12-15 inches Light: Full Sun Soil Moisture: Dry USDA Zone: 3a-10b Seeds ,Produces a bushy plant with star-shaped leaflet clusters and spikes of bright purple flowers.
Harvesting Arroyo Lupine: For cut flowers, choose stems with flowers that have just opened. Strip the foliage that will fall below the water level, and place in water immediately.
About Arroyo Lupine: This wildflower can be found growing throughout the American southwest; it is especially widespread in California, its native state. The name Lupine comes from the Latin âlupus,â meaning wolf. This refers to the folk belief that
this plant took nutrients from the soil. Ironically, this plant actually improves the soil because of its nitrogen fixing abilities.
Arroyo Lupine Germination: To soften the hard coating on these seeds, rub them lightly with sandpaper or soak them in 180 degrees F water overnight before sowing. Sow them in early spring, planting 1/2â deep. Keep the soil lightly moist until
germination.
When to sow outside: RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after average last frost.
When to start inside: 4 to 6 weeks before average last frost. Lupines donât like to be transplanted, therefore, start in pulp pots that can be transplanted directly into ground without disturbing roots.
More Details
Before sowing Lupine seeds, soak the flower seed in warm water for 24 hours. The soaking will aid in germination. You can sow Lupine seeds indoors, 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost is expected. Use starter trays and peaty soil, sowing the Lupine flower seeds on top and lightly covering. Keep seed moist until germination. Transplant the Lupine seedlings when they have reach 4 inches in height and frost danger has passed. Lupine flower seed can also be sown outdoors after danger of frost. In prepared soil, sow 3 - 4 seeds together, spacing them 18 - 24 inches apart. Cover lightly and keep seed moist. Thin to strongest plant when they reach 2 inches. For the first season, water Lupines well after planting and maintain 1 inch of water, once per week. Following this water routine the first year will ensure deep root establishment. The following years, as the Lupine matures, they will acclimate and use what water is provided by the environment and should only need irrigation during periods of prolonged heat and drought.
