Fargesia fungosa Seeds – Hardy Clumping Bamboo

Also known as: Borinda fungosa, Hardy Clumping Bamboo

Looking for a bamboo that won’t take over your garden? Meet Fargesia fungosa — a well-behaved, clumping bamboo that stays where you plant it. Growing to a graceful 10–13 ft. (3–4 m), this medium-sized evergreen shrub starts with fresh green culms that mature into striking reddish tones, adding year-round color and texture to borders, screens, and containers. Its feathery foliage and upright habit make it one of the most elegant bamboos you can grow from seed.

Hardy and adaptable, Fargesia fungosa thrives in sunny to partially shaded locations and is an excellent choice for privacy screens, windbreaks, or as a dramatic garden specimen.

Why Gardeners Love It

  • 🌿 Non-invasive clumping habit — stays contained, no running roots
  • 🌴 Striking culm color — green when young, deepening to red with age
  • ❄️ Cold hardy — tolerates frost and cooler climates
  • 🌟 Versatile placement — full sun to partial shade
  • 🏡 Perfect for privacy screens, windbreaks, and ornamental borders
  • 🌳1 Evergreen — provides year-round structure and beauty

How to Germinate

Step 1 – Pre-soak: Soak seeds in lukewarm water (about 86°F / 30°C) for 24 hours.

Step 2 – Prepare your medium: Use Jiffy 7 Peat Pellets — soak them in water and place in a small plastic pot. Sow seeds on the surface of the pellets and cover with a thin layer of peat (about 2 mm).

Step 3 – Create a humidity chamber: Place the pot inside a zip-lock bag. Add a small amount of tap water mixed with a few drops of universal fertilizer — just enough so a few mm of water remain at the bottom after the substrate absorbs it. Seal the bag. No further watering is needed as moisture won’t evaporate.

Step 4 – Location & temperature: Place on a bright windowsill or in a small greenhouse in partial shade. Maintain daytime temperatures of 80–90°F (27–32°C) and slightly cooler nights of 77–83°F (25–28°C). This micro-climate is ideal for germination.

Step 5 – Germination: Expect sprouts in 10–40 days depending on conditions. Once seedlings are established, gradually acclimate to normal growing conditions before transplanting outdoors.
