Early season garlic harvest!
This is likely the most commonly grown variety in the U.S., and for good reason. It is a large, easy to grow softneck, with a nice mild flavor and excellent storage ability. Cal-Early is one of our "work-horse” varieties we depend on, year after year, for fresh market and garlic braiding. The skins are a nice off-white with a purple blush and it produces 8-10 cloves per head.
Garlic California White, Allium sativum 'California White', produces large, plump soft neck bulbs that have papery skins and plenty of creamy-white cloves bursting with excellent, spicy-hot flavor. California White Garlic is easy to grow, very productive, and adaptable to any climate; 120 days to maturity and each bulb makes 10 to 20 cloves! Garlic is grown from the individual cloves, and each clove will produce one plant with a single bulb. California Garlic does well in a variety of climates; a cool season crop that has acclimated to northern conditions. Garlic beds should be well drained and free from weeds; raised beds with well worked soil are ideal. As garlic reaches maturity, the leaves will brown then die away, so this is the cue that it is time to harvest your garlic crop. They can be harvested and stored as you would onions. The bulbs should be hung for a week or so in a cool, dry place so they do not rot.
