Size: 3 bulbs

Give sunny beds and patio containers a lush, tropical look with Canna Mix rhizomes. These vigorous plants bring bold foliage and seasonal flowers to borders, waterside plantings, and garden focal points. Grow them as perennials where conditions allow, or lift and protect the rhizomes over winter in cold climates.

What You Receive

Choose 3 or 10 canna rhizomes. The 3-piece option is labeled “3 bulbs,” but cannas grow from rhizomes. This listing is for planting rhizomes, not seeds or established potted plants.

This is a mixed selection. Specific flower colors, foliage colors, varieties, and proportions are not confirmed, and there is no separate color selector.

Growing Highlights

  • Light: Full sun.
  • Soil: Rich, fertile soil with consistent moisture.
  • Habit: Vigorous, tropical-style herbaceous growth.
  • Uses: Borders, garden focal points, large containers, and moist waterside beds.
  • Winter care: Protect from freezing where not locally hardy.

Planting Your Rhizomes

Plant outdoors in spring after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed. Loosen the planting area and incorporate compost to improve soil structure and fertility. Position rhizomes horizontally with growing points facing upward and cover with soil, following any depth and spacing instructions supplied with your order.

Water after planting and keep the soil moist as shoots develop, without leaving newly planted rhizomes in cold, stagnant water. Mulch around established plants to conserve moisture, keeping mulch away from emerging shoots. Cannas do not require the refrigerated pre-chilling used for some spring-flowering bulbs.

Watering and Feeding

Water deeply during active growth, adjusting frequency to rainfall, heat, and soil conditions. Cannas perform best with consistent moisture, even though established plants may tolerate brief dry spells. Avoid deep standing water unless a particular variety is specifically supplied for aquatic growing.

Feed during active growth with a suitable garden or container fertilizer according to its label. Avoid overfeeding or placing concentrated fertilizer directly against rhizomes.

Growing in Containers

Choose a large, sturdy pot with drainage holes and ample room for rhizomes to expand. Use a rich potting mix that retains moisture while allowing excess water to drain. Place in full sun, sheltered from strong winds that can damage large leaves.

Check moisture frequently during hot or windy weather, as containers can dry rapidly. Water thoroughly when needed and allow drainage. Repot or divide crowded plants during a suitable resting period, rather than disturbing them while actively flowering.

Seasonal Care

Remove faded flower heads to keep plants tidy and encourage further flowering where conditions permit. Trim dead, damaged, or diseased foliage with clean tools. Avoid routine pinching of growing shoots, which can remove developing flower stems.

Growth, mature size, and flowering time vary across a mixed planting and depend on warmth, light, moisture, and care.

Overwintering in Cold Climates

Where freezing winters threaten rhizomes, lift them after foliage is damaged by frost but before the soil freezes. Trim back the dead top growth, allow surface moisture to dry, and store in a cool, frost-free location with ventilation. Avoid both wet storage and excessive shriveling, and check periodically for rot.

Alternatively, move containers into a frost-free sheltered space and reduce watering while dormant. Replant or resume growth in spring when warm conditions return.
