ground virginsbower
Small arbors, trellises, and step railings where its fragrant flowers can be appreciated. For larger arbors and fences, consider planting a more vigorous vine-like crossvine or coral honeysuckle.

This unusual selection of Clematis is not a vining plant at all but has a sprawling, bushy habit. Quickly bursts out of the ground in the spring, with foliage of an unusual smoky-purple shade, fading to green by mid summer. Plants produce a good display of fragrant little white star-shaped flowers in early summer. Will require staking, or plants can be allowed to sprawl through an adjacent shrub. Prune to the ground in fall or early spring. May be divided in spring, but plants take a season to recover. Interesting cut flower

How to Grow Clematis
Clematis prefer their heads in the sun and their roots in the shade, so use other plants to provide the necessary shade or cover the ground with stones or flat pebbles.
Sow onto good quality compost, covering the seeds to approximatley their own depth with fine grit or compost. Germination can be slow, 2 to3 months is not unusual. Grow on in individual 3 inch pots before planting out with climbing support.
