A mid-season blooming perennial, Fleabane or Aspen Daisy does best in full to partial sun, tolerates dry to moist soils, but prefers well-drained soil that is not too rich. It grows from Alberta and British Columbia, south to Montana, New Mexico, and Arizona in wooded areas, at 5800-11,000 feet elevation. A showy, vigorous plant with violet flowers that attracts butterflies, it will form colonies that should be divided when they begin to overlap.
Erigeron (Erigeron Speciosus Azure Fairy) - Grow this beautiful, yet hardy perennial from Erigeron seeds for your garden! Once it is established, it is carefree. It gives lots of blooms, and it will bring in the butterflies. Large semi-double lavender daisy-like flowers with yellow centers are produced all summer. The blooms are 1 - 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The flowers are long-lasting, and they do well in the garden or in cut flower arrangements. Erigeron is a hardy perennial that will tolerate dry weather. It will rebloom if cut back after flowering which will greatly increase the blooming season. Cut back the stems to ground level in early spring. Divide large clumps every 2 - 3 years, discarding the woody crowns. Erigeron is also known as Showy Daisy, Aspen Fleabane and Fleabane Daisy. Erigeron Daisy Fleabane has been known to repel fleas.
Sow Erigeron seeds indoors 4 - 6 weeks before last frost. Use sterile starter mix and sow the flower seeds onto the mix. Do not cover the seeds because they do need light for germination. Transplant seedlings when temperature are warmed up. For directly sowing Erigeron flower seeds outdoors, wait until frost danger has passed and directly spread flower seeds onto prepared beds. Keep the Fleabane Daisy seeds moist but do not cover them.
