growing tip:For best results, soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours or lightly scarify them before planting on a 1-ft. diameter mound, spaced 4-6' apart, during spring/early summer after the last frost in a warm, sunny location.

Row planting: See spacing info in chart. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Hand pollination may be necessary. Train to climb a vertical support for better air circulation, straighter fruit and ease of harvest. To process for luffa sponges, allow gourds to hang on the vine until they are fully mature and the skin dries and hardens. Remove skin and seeds.

Harvesting Extra Long Gourd

When preparing for consumption, pick the gourds when they are a vibrant green and have a firm texture. For use as a shower loofah, let the gourds mature on the plant until they turn brown and dry, then carefully remove the outer layer and extract the seeds.
